Information I have found myself:
-
Also in Liberty was a girl named Abbie Bengel. At sixteen, Fred took her to a camp meeting in Gerow Grove, later the site of the Triangle Diner. There were large maple trees there.
-
The Triangle came to Liberty in 1938, when Hymie Heller purchased what had been CY's 9W Diner in Newburgh. He moved it to a prominent spot just outside the village, most often referred to in that time as Gerow's Grove.
-
August 1995 fired burned it down...The Liberty occupied that same spot until then.
-
Opened 24 hours a day.
-
The Grill was right in front of the counter
-
A Chinese Kitchen and a lounge were added during its history.
-
George Suslosky was the short order cook, was one of the best and most demanding in the industry.
-
All the orders were called into the grill by the waitresses and most were done in code - a form of verbal short hand... "Adam and Eve on a raft" or "one in with" were examples of the code...if the waitress got the code wrong she didt get her food.
-
The Triangle was located on the corner of 52 and old 17 - it was on the same side of the road as the Howard Johnson, there was a small gas station between the 2...As you are returning to route 17, at the first traffice light you come to directly to the left is where the diner was - Sam's service station stuff is there now.
